Spiders on the Radio—and in Print
Yours truly is notable—or at least The Best American series thinks so.
Glad to be in such great company.
I got a nice surprise a few weeks ago when I found out that a feature I wrote for Outside in 2022, "Keep Your Bird Watching—I'm a Spider Man", got an honorable mention in The Best American Science and Nature Writing of 2023. Like anyone with a deeply weird hobby, I'm usually more excited to talk about spiders than most people are to listen. I'm honored to know that someone read that piece and thought it was worthy of being listed next to so many stellar science communicators.
Speaking of getting to jabber about spiders, the Outside Podcast had me on for Halloween to talk about arachnids. My colleague Maren Larsen and I went on a quest to cure her arachnophobia by getting up close with a whole zooful of orb weavers and tarantulas at the Butterfly Pavilion in Denver. Maren did a fantastic job putting the episode together, and was a good sport about being surrounded by some of the largest spiders I've personally seen.
